Prince Edward is the third son and youngest child of Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip. He was born at Buckingham Palace on 10 March , and christened at Windsor Castle on 2 May He was educated at Heatherdown Preparatory School, Ascot, and like his father and two brothers went on to Gordonstoun School in Scotland where he was head boy in his last term.
In he spent a gap year as a house tutor at the Collegiate School, Wanganui, in New Zealand.
On his return he attended Jesus College, University of Cambridge and graduated in with a degree in History. His interests included theatrical productions. On leaving Cambridge he joined the Royal Marines but did not take to the army life. He resigned his army commission in , and joined Andrew Lloyd Weber�s Really Useful theatrical company.

He was made Duke of Edinburgh on his 59th birthday on 10 March , a title that his father Prince Philip had held for 74 years and his elder brother, Charles, briefly held after their father's death.
